On the Road Again- Lake Tahoe

Recently, we were able to visit a golf Mecca that is well known only to a few. It is Reno/Lake Tahoe.

I have been watching the American Century Celebrity Golf Tourney on television each summer for several years. It is held at a beautiful course called Edgewood Tahoe, right on the shores of Lake Tahoe. Now I have seen the course up close, and it is as beautiful as the TV pictures.

We went to Lake Tahoe at the end of October for a little get away. Of course, I wanted to use it as an opportunity to scout out courses and resorts that could appeal to Golf Exclusives customers. I was unable to play golf because the season closes in that area in mid October, but I was able to see some courses and get a better understanding of the golf possibilities in that area.

    So here goes my review:

Reno is a fast growing area in northern Nevada that is near I-80 as it crosses into California. About 25 miles south across the Sierra Mountains is Incline Village and the north shore of Lake Tahoe.

We stayed at the Hyatt Regency Resort and Casino. Courses nearby are the Championship course that in 2003 received a complete facelift. Renowned golf course architect Kyle Phillips was in charge of this $4.8 million renovation. In keeping with the original Trent Jones, Sr. design, the greens, bunkers, tees, fairways and roughs have been reshaped and reseeded.

At the Mountain course, Robert Trent Jones Jr. used nature as his guide when he designed this 18-hole, par 58 course. The Mountain Course staff continues in that tradition and has been designated a 'Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary'. With greens and contours carved out of the mountain landscape and naturally winding streams, this course is a true joy to play. Besides a commitment to the environment, the Mountain Course is also committed to its customers. It has been voted "Best Golf" by Tahoe locals year after year and is ranked #1 in the nation for customer satisfaction by the National Golf Foundation.

Lake Tahoe borders Incline Village and extends to the south 22 miles and 12 miles across. We drove around the Lake at a leisurely pace and learned some lake trivia. If you emptied Lake Tahoe onto the entire state of California, it would cover the state with 14.5 inches of water. Edgewood Tahoe Golf Club, site of the annual Celebrity tourney is in the southeast corner of the lake near a casino in Stateline Nevada.

The Mourelatos Lakeshore Resort on the north shore of Lake Tahoe is one of the newest and highest rated resorts in the North Lake Tahoe area. The resort features 32 studio suites, each enjoying a spectacular view of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding Sierra Nevada Mountains. Each suite includes a covered patio seating area overlooking our private 275 ft. wide sandy beach and our lakefront units have larger patios with panoramic lake views.

To the northwest of Lake Tahoe is Squaw Valley, CA, site of the 1960 Winter Olympics. This is a significant ski and golf area with courses we recommend like Coyote Moon, Tahoe Donner, and Old Greenwood. The Resort at Squaw Creek would be a good location to base out of for your golf vacation.

In the Reno area there are many hotel choices and 20 golf courses to choose from. We have placed groups at the El Dorado Hotel and Casino, and had them play at nearby courses like Wolf Run, and D'Andrea. This dramatic layout meanders through mountainous foothills and high desert canyons, ascending to a point on the scenic back nine that features some of the most spectacular vistas of the Reno area and the magnificent Sierra. Lake Ridge Golf Course is an exceptional blend of challenges, aesthetics, strategy and fun. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., it has been named Reno's best golf course by Golf Week Magazine (March 2004).

Please contact mike@golfexclusives.com if you want to plan a golf trip to the Lake Tahoe area. I have the expertise and resources to plan a memorable trip for you.

The Golfest Story by Jim Allen

America has become a society of lists -- the best of this or the best of that. Jim Allen of Anaheim Hills, CA decided to quit perusing those lists and began acting on it. In his case, it became a quest to play the Top 100 Public Golf Courses in the United States (according to Golf Digest - 2005-06 rankings). This mission requires a commitment to travel to 34 states to play first class golf establishments such as Pebble Beach, Pinehurst, Kiawah Island, and the Kapalua Plantation. To date, Jim has nailed down 44 of the courses and aims to hit the century mark within two years.

"I brought up the concept with a bunch of friends and before I knew it, we had 16 people who wanted in," said Jim. "Most of us have pegboards in our office marked with the courses that we have played. At this point in the game, it's become a race to see who can get it done first."

Jim schedules a major week-long golf trip every year for the group (usually in May) to knock off as many sites as possible. The event is entitled GOLFEST and usually features nine or more rounds of golf. No tourist attractions, just eat, golf, eat, golf again and travel to the next destination. This year's trip - "GOLFEST 2008 - The Great Lakes Tour"- is booked to Michigan with the assistance of Mike Fitzgerald of Golf Exclusives.

Last summer, Jim took the Golfest concept to the next level. He created and maintains the group's website Golfest, a site that racked up more than 9000 hits in six months. It's a collection of course reviews, trip recaps, funny stories, jokes, and Golfest participant profiles.

"We have all talent levels covered in our group," Jim explained, "from scratch golfers to a few hackers who shoot a 120 and lose a dozen balls each round. Our only requirement is that you have fun. If you take the game too seriously, we quit inviting you."

Golfest members include friends, relatives, co-workers and even customers. The common denominator is to their mutual quest to play the top 100 courses.

"We have become familiar faces on Southwest Airlines," continued Jim. "If there is a ranked course with 300 miles of a business trip destination or family vacation spot, we are bringing our clubs."
