Summer in the city
|
|
I imagine that most of you are firmly into summer by now, enjoying the beach, the cottage and other retreats that help us to relax. Since we are all golfers, I hope that you are getting in some rounds at your favorite vacation destination.
Please send me a note about your favorite summer resort golf destination. I want to feature some of them in upcoming issues, so spread the word. A gift certificate will be yours as a thank you.
As you plan your Autumn golf getaway, here are the destinations I recommend:
Garland Resort: In northern Michigan, This resort will be blazing in fall colors soon, and has great rates after September 18. See my story about Garland. Learn more
Callaway Gardens: Near Atlanta, this beautiful resort is a family favorite because of the water and hiking trails there. Learn more
San Diego: The weather is always temperate there. There are three San Diego resorts to choose from, so give me a call. Learn more
Here is a putting review from our friends at Garland:
What is a perfect putting stroke? How about one that returns the putter face square to the target line every time.
Because putting is so individualistic, there is really no right or wrong way to make a good repeating stroke. In fact, for every sound fundamental, there is at least one great player who is an exception to it. There are, however, seven principles that the majority of teachers agree upon for putting.
- Eyes should be over or just inside the ball.
- Set the clubface square to the target.
- Position the ball forward of center.
- Keep the body motion limited.
- Use an accelerating stroke through the ball.
- Be comfortable.
- Make solid contact by hitting the ball in the putter's sweet spot.

On the Road Again - Garland Resort Revisited
|
|
We first visited Garland in 1999, and this is what we said at the time. "Garland Resort is a AAA 4 -diamond resort in Lewiston MI. We stayed in a two- bedroom log villa, and played Fountains, their premium course. It was too difficult for me, a high handicap golfer. I highly recommend Garland, a four season resort with great amenities."
1999 was a long time ago, so it was great to revisit them this week. Lots of things have changed, but the hospitality remains the same, top notch. There are four courses with a fifth on the way. The housing choices have greatly expanded, with several styles to choose from. The development of the resort for meetings has increased, and there are many more four season events. I am featuring some on them in this issue to give you a taste. Another thing that has improved is access to the resort from better roads. Kids Stay and Play Free Come and enjoy free golf and room with your kids at Michigan's most beautiful resort, with a paid adult.
With four of the most beautiful and spectacular championship golf courses in the Nation, Garland offers guests an exceptional golfing experience. The natural backdrop of 3,500 acres of unspoiled wilderness provides the perfect setting for our four courses -
Fountains,Swampfire, Monarch, and Reflections. Each hole has its own unique character and design including rolling-meadows, lakes, streams, mature hardwoods, and dramatic elevation changes. To add to your golfing experience the sights and sounds of natural wildlife abound including nesting bald eagles, deer and foxes. Plus with all our courses starting from a single pro shop you'll spend more time on the course!
Swampfire, opened in 1987, was the first of the four new courses at Garland designed by Ron Otto. A round of 18 on this course will require patience and precision as all but four of the holes have water hazards. This course will be a true assessment of your shot-making ability.
Fountains, the newest of our four courses, opened in 1995. This 6,800-yard course is a miraculous match for its beautiful setting. Don White, PGA Director of Golf at Garland Resort, notes that this course is loaded with water challenges; it has water on nine of its holes, mainly sparkling ponds enhanced by fountains.
The Reflections Course, designed by Ron Otto and built in 1992, is one of the favorite courses at Garland, in part because it's our shortest course and also because it's lush fairways meander through a forest of majestic pines. "A driver is often unnecessary to play this course," said Tom Howell, assistant golf professional. "It's also very friendly to women and on No. 10; you'll also see our famous Eagle's nest.
Monarch, built in 1990, has a layout that is one of Michigan's longest golf courses, a formidable 7,188 yards from the back tees. But despite the length from the tips and the streams, ponds and lakes found on 14 of the 18 holes, this is one course that particularly appeals to women. The forward tees are set at 4,904 yards. This course is also a favorite because of the nesting bald eagles that are located on hole #11.
