Golf Exclusives E-Newsletter - October 1, 2004

Editor: Mike Fitzgerald

Editors Note

This is what I wrote in the October issue last year: "This newsletter too, is a little tardy. I apologize to the readers that have been asking about the Newsletter, but it is World Series time in Chicago !! Beside having a serious case of writers block, I have been spending a lot of time on the golf course, and in front of the TV watching the Cubs move toward the World Series for the first time since 1908 !! How are those for reasons…excuses. Today it is raining, so writing is a lot easier"

What a difference a year makes. I’m still late, but I can’t blame it on the Cubs!

Report from the Emerald Isle

  • The management team of Golf Exclusives has just returned from a fabulous trip to Ireland. Here are some impressions and anecdotes from the trip, to give you our insight into golf and fun in Ireland.

  • The golf is great. We played Mahoney’s Point and Adare, both parkland courses, and saw several others. Prices are higher than they were a few years back, but the experience will not be forgotten. Did you see Mt Juliet on the AMEX championship this weekend? It looked exactly like the 2 courses we played…. And even matched the weather.

  • The weather was cool, gray and windy. Leave the shorts at home and bring a wind breaker.

  • We visited Dublin, Guinness, Waterford, Blarney Stone, Killarney, Kinsale and Adare. You should plan to sight see along with the golf, as there are many things to see and do in Ireland.

  • The whiskey and the beer are fabulous. Visit as many pubs and bars as you can, and talk with the locals. They are very friendly, and especially proud of their result in the Ryder Cup.

  • I don’t particularly like "Irish food" I.e. Irish stew, shepherds pie and salmon. Not to worry. There is all the beef, chicken and pasta you might want in addition to the traditional favorites.

  • If you plan to go to Mass in Dublin, don’t pick St. Patrick’s Cathedral. We did, and found out that it is an Anglican Church. Oh well….

  • If you are looking for American sports news, purchase the USA Today at The Waterford Crystal factory. It was the only place we got scores in an entire week.

  • Remember that the Blarney Stone is on the TOP of the Blarney Castle.

  • There are no readable street signs in Dublin. Use public transportation, or do Map Quest before you leave home
On the Road Again - The American Club – Home of the 2004 PGA Tournament

We are considering adding this fine resort to our website. We can book you stay and golf now, so we wanted you to learn more about this great Mid west destination.

The American Club, the Midwest's only AAA Five Diamond Resort Hotel provides country elegance in the charming village of Kohler, less than an hour north of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The resort offers a host of diversions year-round, including award-winning golf courses Blackwolf Run and Whistling Straits; the Kohler Waters Spa; and special events such as the Kohler Food & Wine Experience, Christmas Kohler and a Spring Garden Market.

Blackwolf Run, offers an award-winning 36 holes of championship golf in Kohler, Wisconsin. Its two 18-hole courses have been skillfully carved out of the natural environment and are designed for golfers who appreciate the game's great traditions. Both courses at Blackwolf Run, the River Course and the Meadow Valleys Course, were designed by renowned course architect Pete Dye and given names to reflect the natural features of the terrain. Scores of pot bunkers and water areas shored with railroad ties complement the Scottish influences in Dye's work. Vast, undulating greens further define Dye's vision for Blackwolf Run. Hybrid grasses delineate various sections of the course.

Blackwolf Run, opened for play in June 1988 and was named that year "Best New Public Course" by Golf Digest magazine. It has continued to accumulate awards and honors including regular ranking on the list of "America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses" by Golf Digest and the "Top 100 You Can Play" by GOLF Magazine.

Whistling Straits—an extraordinary combination of legendary design by Pete Dye and visionary inspiration of Herbert V. Kohler, Jr. Beginning with a 560-acre parcel of flat land, Dye sculpted a bit of Ireland and a touch of Scotland out of the Wisconsin coastline. If you ask Pete Dye, he’ll tell you that building Whistling Straits was a "once in a lifetime thing"—an impressive claim for one considered the foremost golf course designer of our time.

Whistling Straits, which opened in 1998, offers two courses of dynamic contrast. Open, rugged and windswept terrain defines the Straits Course sculpted along two miles of Lake Michigan shoreline. Just inland, interspersed by four meandering streams, the grassland-and-dunes aspect of the Irish Course is a deceivingly tranquil landscape.

At this year's 2004 PGA Championship, Darren Clark set a new course record on the Straits Course by shooting a 7 under 65. The very next day, Miguel Angel Jimenez tied that course record by shooting a 65 of his own. Of course, no one was happier than Vijay Singh, after winning his 3rd career major by defeating Justin Leonard and Chris DiMarco in a 3-hole playoff.
