Golf Exclusives E-Newsletter - July 1, 2004
Editor: Mike Fitzgerald
Welcome to the Summer Issue
We are at the height of the golf season in the upper Midwest. There are great courses to visit and play, sunshine nearly every day, and a great deal of enthusiasm and optimism.
We made some nice additions to the website this past quarter that we want to share with you. The first is the addition of Lake Lawn Resort in Wisconsin as our newest recommendation . Read all about it later in this E Newsletter. Our second big change was to add a Partners section to the site This section list a link to other golf web sites that we do business with or have golf in common. Please visit the Partners section by clicking www.golfexclusives.com/partners.html. We encourage you to patronize our partners, and to add your link requests at the bottom of the site that will allow us to recommend some of the golf website locations you visit and like.
Lastly, we recommend that you make www.golfexclusives.com the portal home page on your computer, like I do. When I sign onto the Internet, Golf Exclusives’ soothing green website appears first, and you can easily see the new specials and features the site is offering. To set us up as your homepage, sign on to Internet Explorer, click on Tools, then Internet Options, then General Home Page. Enter www.golfexclusives.com in place of your current choice, apply and click OK.
Let’s start with a review of golf in Southeast Michigan, my state of birth as we prepare for the upcoming Ryder Cup.
Southeast Michigan readies for the Super Bowl of Golf
In September of 2004, the Detroit, Michigan area will be the battlefield stage for the 35th Ryder Cup Matches, an event that has gone from a once quiet international golf exhibition to the most anticipated golf team competition in the world.
Every two years, the Ryder Cup matches take center stage as one of the world's premier sporting events. Europe and the United States take turns hosting this colorful and dramatic biennial event. Over history, only 17 courses in the United States have served as the site for the matches, and no course or club has ever held the matches twice. In 2004, the prestigious Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, will become the 18th course to host the Ryder Cup competition.
Hal Sutton will be the U.S. captain for the 2004 Ryder Cup. "Oakland Hills is one of the greatest golf courses in the world. When I teed it up in the U.S. Open in 1985, I was paired with Jack Nicklaus and we started out on the first hole. I looked out there and the fairway was 17 yards wide and the rough looked like it was knee deep. I said, "hey Jack, there is a fairway out there, isn't there?'" Sutton recalled. "I think it's one of the toughest venues you can take any major championship to. It's a tremendous golf course."
A trip to the Ryder Cup in Detroit will be incomplete without playing golf in one of the hottest golf markets in the country. Its several great private and high-end public courses will now receive even more attention and exposure. Donald Ross, the original architect of the famed South Course-host of the 35th Ryder Cup matches also designed several other famed layouts in the metro area including Franklin Hills CC, Detroit Golf Club, Grosse Ile Golf and Country Club, Bloomfield Hills Country Club, and Western Golf and Country Club.
A new public facility, Westwynd Golf Course, in Rochester Hills, is designed by Craig Schreiner, an accomplished Kansas City based golf course architect. The course flows across a broad tract of hills, tall fescue plots, and wetlands. Westwynd is a shot-maker's golf course in the best context of the clichéd phrase. Shepherd's Hollow, a 27-hole Arthur Hills design located on dramatically rolling and wooded land 40 miles north of Detroit, instantly became one of Detroit's top public golf facilities when it opened two years ago. The wooded scenery is lush. Hills described the property as, "as good an inland site for golf as there is anywhere in the U.S." In January 2002, Golf Digest ranked Shepherd's Hollow the sixth "Best New Course in the Country." Variety of golf in one location is rare, but Fox Hills Golf and Banquet Center in Plymouth has done it. Fox Hills is a 63-hole public golf complex that caters to every golfing demographic and players of varying skill levels. The Classic Fox, Golden Fox, and Strategic Fox courses, each with a separate clubhouse and banquet facilities have made Fox Hills a genuine gathering place. Strategic Fox was developed primarily as a way to grow the game of golf and make it fun for beginners. Family-owned and operated, Fox Hills was named "Golf Course of the Year" by the National Golf Course Owners Association in 2002.
If you are planning to attend the Ryder cup, or play the courses in Southeast Michigan, please contact me for assistance We have a Ryder Cup package on the site, and have developed a good knowledge of the courses nearby.

On the Road Again
Our newest Featured Destination is Lake Lawn Resort in Wisconsin. Their General Manager, Tony Miu, and I go back over ten years I found Tony to be the most hospitable person I had ever known. His hospitality continues at Lake Lawn. I urge you to visit them for wonderful hospitality, and great golf.
Lake Lawn Resort is 90 minutes from Chicago, and easily accessible from anywhere in the Midwest. At Lake Lawn Resort in Delavan, Wisconsin you'll find warmth, comfort and genuine heartland hospitality. Nestled among 275 of its own wooded acres along the shoreline of scenic Delavan Lake, the resort provides a relaxed, casual setting for both business and pleasure. Today, it remains a perfect site for fun, relaxation and recreation, and is just minutes from Lake Geneva in southeastern Wisconsin. They offer abundant recreation choices and perfect Wisconsin weather for every season. There are 284 charming guest rooms with balconies, many with fireplaces and lake views, 18 holes of exceptional golf designed by Dick Nugent, and the home course of the John Jacobs Golf School of Wisconsin. Delavan Lake provides unlimited water sports, boat rentals and fishing trips.
The golf course, set on Lake Lawn Resort's 275 acres, incorporates picturesque Delavan Lake as part of the challenge. It is perhaps best known for its variety of aging oaks and ancient elms which diligently guard many of the greens. Deep sand bunkers seem to appear in every direction and the subtle undulations in the greens and fairways can be deceiving. The tee boxes are set for three levels of players and many of the greens are tiered or oversized. In fact, the greens are often the main topics of conversation after play is over.
Beside the resort course, you can choose from many other courses nearby to complete your golf package. They include Geneva National with its 3 signature courses, designed by Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, and Gary Player. Lake Como comes into play on hole #17 on the Palmer Course and on hole #5 on the Trevino Course. Every tee on the Gary Player nine is rated for both men and ladies. Grand Geneva with two championships courses, the Highlands Course is one of the first Pete Dye and Jack Nicklaus creations that feature Scottish influences throughout its design. There is heather-type rough and large bunkers protecting the borders of the fairways. Bob Cupp completed a redesign of this course in 1997, completely revamping it into its current links-style design. The Brute Course's huge rolling greens average over 8,000 square feet in size. "GOLF Magazine" described this course as "a behemoth that ranks among the toughest layouts in the Midwest."
