Golf Exclusives Newsletter - February 1, 2000

Cold Weather Golfing By Susan Weitzman, Golf Matters
Bra! It's January in Chicago. How can you play golf comfortably? Here are some tips:
  • Use plastic wrapped heat pads in your gloves.
  • Keep yourself and your clubs dry.
  • Use more club, and shorten your swing to conserve energy.
  • Use 80 compression balls on colder days.

Prize Winners
We had a nice turnout at our Golf Vacation Show in November, and are planning more shows soon. Featured suppliers at the show were Charleston Golf Partners, Emerald Isle Golf, World Class Sports and Kapalua Villas. We had two grand prizewinners:

Bob Kolbe- weekend for 2 at Saddlebrook
Ev Lockevitz - 2 American Airlines tickets. It pays to attend!

On the Road Again
Our golf travel continues. In November, Betty and I traveled to Hawaii, specifically to the island of Oahu and Kauai. It's the rainy season there, but still warm enough to play golf. On Oahu, our first stop, there are over 25 courses. Most are open to vacationers. We played the Links at Kuilima, located on the north shore at the Hilton Turtle Bay Resort. The Links is a Palmer/Seay design, and features many blind shots. It is located near Sunset Beach, site of the famous Bonsai Pipeline, and near Haleakawa Joe's, a friendly oceanfront casual restaurant.

On Kauai, there are courses north at Princeville (81 holes), in the center Kauai Lagoons and Kiele) and south at the Poipu Bay Resort. All are within 50 miles of each other. We played Kauai Lagoons, a Nicklaus design, and shot a great round with rented clubs. Ask Betty about her great shot on the signature hole.

Even though we didn't visit Maui, we highly recommend Kapalua, site of the recent Mercedes Championship won by Tiger Woods. They are opening a state-of-art practice facility, have three courses, and very low rates, compared to golf rates elsewhere in Hawaii.

Our next newsletter will tell you about the golf in Acapulco. Until then….
Mike Fitzgerald
